Entries for Gay Games III will be available for the first time ever to participants in the 1989 Northwest Gay-Lesbian Sports Festival in Seattle this July, according to Metropolitan Vancouver Athletic and Arts Association, organizers of the Games.
"We're delighted Gay Games officials decided to debut their entries at the Sports Festival," said Team Seattle CoChair Rich Peterson. "We have worked closely with the Games people for several years now."
Team Seattle organizes the Sports Festival in Seattle during the Fourth of July weekend each year that the Games do not occur.
Three new sports recently were added to the Sports Festival: fencing, bench press and martial arts. In addition, a men's division has been added to the Festival softball tournament.
"This is why we decided to hold the Sports Festival in the first place," said Betty Whitaker, Team Seattle co-chair.
Other sports this year include tennis, croquet, women's softball, bowling,

swimming, water polo, men's and women's volleyball, diving, golf and running.
The four-day extravaganza July 1-4 includes a banquet Monday night at the Seattle Trade Center and an all-athletes party on the waterfront Sunday night at the Seattle Aquarium.
The Sports Festival is again made possible in part by a grant from K & L Distributors in Bellevue, Wash., which distributes Anheuser Busch, Perrier and Soho products throughout western Washington.
Host housing can be arranged for athletes. In addition, a block of rooms at Seattle's Tropics Motor Inn has been reserved for Sports Festival athletes. For more information or to make travel arrangements, call 800-233-5961.
Entries for all Sports Festival events are available. To receive entry forms or for more information about the Sports Festival, contact Team Seattle at 1206 E.Pike St., Seattle, Wash. 98122, or call 206-322-2777.
Keys takes volleyball title
by K. D. Mahnal
Keys took league championship as the North Coast Volleyball League (NCVL) completed its winter session held at Estabrook Recreation on Friday nights.
NCVL holds a fall and winter league that is between 12-14 weeks in length.
This year's winter league had five teams, each with 8 to 10 players. A clinic lasting approximately two weeks is held prior to each session. The more highly skilled players teach techniques to other league participants, creating more evenly skilled teams. Also reviewed during the clinics are the U.S. Volleyball Association rules which govern the NCVL play.
All teams are coed, with higher skilled players providing the core of each team. A general lottery assigns the remaining participants to help ensure more equal
competition and fun.
Teams are self-sponsored or sponsored by businesses with a $100 sponsor's fee. The sponsor's fee pays for the referees, gym and banquet. Players contribute a one-time $10 fee for the entire
season.
NCVL Commissioner Alex Bruchac is looking ahead to the beginning of the fall season as a challenge. There is a need for "more people to participate in the league, just grow in numbers," states Bruchac.
A social volleyball group will begin in early June. The group meets every Sunday at Edgewater Park (west end) by the Wagner statue at 2:00 p.m. More information on this group can be obtained by contacting Mort B. through the LesbianGay Community Service Center's Hotline at 781-6736.
